These are the players who have been number 1 on the World Padel Tour

Since the creation of the World Padel Tour in 2013, there have only been 10 players who have been number 1 and have been at the top of the ranking. We present them to you below!

The 10 players who have been number 1 on the World Padel Tour

Fernando Belasteguín (2013-2018)

The ‘Boss’ is, for the vast majority, the best padel player in history. By numbers, there is no doubt that he is the greatest figure of this sport, being the person who has remained in this first position for the longest time. Along with Juan Martin Diaz, he was at the top almost consecutively for more than a decade. This list only takes into account the World Padel Tour era, but this couple was number 1 for several years before the creation of the circuit.

However, their legacy is not only formed with ‘El Galleguito’, but they continued to dominate the circuit with Pablo Lima for three more years. Alongside the Brazilian, he held the top spot from 2015 to 2018. Although he hasn’t returned to that place of privilege, Bela has continued to add to his legend alongside other teammates by winning several titles.

Juan Martín Díaz (2013-2015)

The Lord of the reflexes is another of those who could not be missing in this list. The couple formed with Fernando Belasteguín is, to date, the most dominant in history. It was the duo that took padel to another level and the first to cement what modern padel is.

With an unbeaten record and many years of leadership, they maintained that first position in the ranking until 2015, when they broke up. From then on, Juan Martin hasn’t returned to the top with any other partner.

One of the most unexpected, but you can’t forget that Juani Mieres was World Padel Tour number 1 for a short period of time in 2014. Many pages don’t mention it, but it’s an achievement that he achieved alongside Pablo Lima, with whom he formed a couple from 2009 to 2015. After that, despite teaming up with Juan Martin Diaz, he didn’t achieve it again.

The Brazilian has also reached the top of the rankings thanks to his powerful left foot, which terrorised the circuit for many years. He achieved it on two occasions: first, in that short stretch alongside Juani Mieres and, later, forming one of the best couples in history with Fernando Belasteguín. From 2015 to 2018, both were the kings of padel. Just like Bela, he has continued to increase his legend along with other couples, but he has never stepped on that first position again.

Maxi Sánchez (2018)

Maxi Sanchez was the first player who managed to unseat Fernando Belasteguin from the top after many years at the top. The couple formed alongside Sanyo Gutiérrez was the best of the 2018 season. However, Maxi was number 1 before his partner, as at the time of achieving it, the ‘Shark’ was just over 100 points ahead of him due to the results achieved the previous year. It was a one-season bloom, as the following year another couple snatched the throne of world padel.

Sanyo Gutiérrez (2018)

Sanyo was also number 1 with Maxi Sanchez, although, as we have mentioned, he got it a little later. Sanyo took longer to reach that position, due to the points of the 2017 season, however, both ended up leading in ranking at the end of the season.

After his split with Maxi after losing the number 1 in 2019, Sanyo has continued to fight at the top over the years, but has never managed to revalidate that top spot.

Juan Lebron (2019-2023)

Juan Lebron was the first Spanish-born player to be ranked number 1 in world padel. Despite being one of the two strongest countries in this sport along with Argentina, no Spaniard had achieved it, and it was not until 23 November 2019 when the player from Cadiz became the first to do so.

In this case the same thing happened as in the previous one, as Lebron had that first position before his partner Paquito Navarro. In the end, both Andalusians managed to get equal points and share the first place.

Despite the good results, this couple decided to break up and Juan Lebron would join Alejandro Galan, in another of the couples that has ended up being one of the most successful in history. In fact, they have maintained their position as the number 1 couple for three years, although they have been surpassed by Tapia and Coello due to a bad start to the season. However, the calendar is long, and they are still in a position to continue fighting for that position.

Paquito Navarro (2019)

One of the most charismatic players to ever step on a padel court and who also managed to be number 1 in the 2019 season. The player from Seville, after several years trying to achieve this feat, ended up doing it together with Juan Lebron. However, the character of both players meant that they had to break up and it was the player from Cadiz who retained the top spot.

For his part, Paquito was very close to returning to lead the ranking alongside Martin Di Nenno in 2021, but a defeat in the semifinals of the Final Master deprived them of that dream.

Ale Galan (2020-2023)

The player from Madrid burst onto the World Padel Tour with a lot of strength. He was one of the great promises that, in time, became a reality. Already with Pablo Lima in 2019 he managed to win several consecutive tournaments, but it wasn’t until he teamed up with Juan Lebron that he managed to become the number 1 in world padel.

The Spanish couple has been characterized by their aggressiveness and offensive game, which has made them keep that position in the ranking for 3 seasons. However, this 2023 will be the first time since before the pandemic that neither he nor Lebron will occupy the first place in the ranking.

Agustin Tapia (2023)

Finally, the most recent addition: Agustin Tapia. The player from Catamarca has had a spectacular start to the year with Arturo Coello as his partner. Thanks to the unbeaten streak and the absence of Lebron and Galan in several tournaments, he has ended up achieving this achievement after the Vigo Open.

However, due to an injury to his partner before the Copenhagen Open, he will again lose the number 1 ranking once the rankings are updated on Monday 22 May.

El Mozart has been mentored by some of the best players in history, also present in this list, who have helped him grow as a professional and who make him a great aspirant to dominate padel for the next few years.

Why isn’t Arturo Coello on this list?

Although Coello and Tapia are the top couple in the ranking, only Agustín occupies the number 1 position. This is because the Argentinean currently has 200 points more than his partner. This is due to the fact that in 2022 both had different partners, so the results from then are still the same.

After taking the final in Vigo last week, Tapia got to 16,250 points, while Arturo remains at 16,040. Therefore, Arturo has not yet been, officially, the number 1 of the World Padel Tour ranking. Although, if they keep the couple and keep getting the same results, they will end up being on par.
