First tournament and first title! Momo Gonzalez and Mike Yanguas make a great debut in Reus

There is no better letter of introduction possible. With hardly any joint training, Momo Gonzalez and Mike Yanguas faced the Reus Open 500 as a test in which they could get to know each other better on the court. However, their performance, with details still to be ironed out, suggests that they have done well to join forces.

Rarely do they win a title in the first tournament they play. Pincho Fernández and José Antonio García Diestro were going to try to stop their rivals from doing so, but their efforts were in vain in the end.

The match started very evenly between the two couples. However, Momo and Mike found a way to do some damage with a break to take a 4-2 lead. There would be no more breaks in the rest of the set, and Gonzalez and Yanguas took the first set 6-3.

The second set was much more varied after the break. The couples found it difficult to hold their serves, and there were breaks on both sides. With the score at 3-3, Momo and Yanguas took control of the game again. They had three tournament points in their hands at 5-4, but they didn’t take advantage. Pincho Fernández and José Antonio García Diestro held on to the scoreboard and ended up forcing tie-break. The Pavelló Olimpic enjoyed the outcome of this match, which would end up falling on the side of the new duo, who won the title with a 7-6.

What better than winning their first tournament to realise that the decision they have made is the right one. Now, Momo Gonzalez and Mike Yanguas will have to wait for the Granada Open in a few days to test themselves, this time, against couples of a higher calibre and the newly formed couples.
