HEAD Padel creates a limited edition in honour of Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe

At HEAD Padel, they take pride in honouring our rich history and legacy. That is why the brand has unveiled a truly remarkable raquet once again. The collaboration brings us closer to the early days of padel in Spain, and its visionary precursor, Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe, while also giving a clear nod to its country of origin: Mexico. A most magical mix.

What was the relationship between Hohenlohe and Corcuera? Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe shared a close friendship with Enrique Corcuera, the renowned Mexican credited with the serendipitous invention of padel, and frequently visited Corcuera at his residence. During one of these visits, he was introduced to the new ‘padel’ court for the first time, an experience that left him immediately captivated.

In 1974, Prince Alfonso brought the game to Spain. He established the first two courts in the country at his Marbella Club Hotel, renowned for its elite clientele, including royalty and celebrities. At that time, it was frequented by luminaries such as Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, Kim Novak, James Stewart and Sean Connery, as well as members of the European aristocracy: Juan Carlos I, Grace Kelly and the kings of Sweden.

Similar to the Corcuera court, these courts were constructed “by eye,” using available land. In its first year, padel took off like wildfire in Marbella. Local residents and frequent tourists alike became regular patrons of the Marbella Club, drawn by the allure of this sport tailored for the jet set.

HEAD Padel has crafted a limited edition racket in tribute to Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe, fondly recognized as the “grandfather of padel”. It is inspired by the iconic cactus, a staple of the Americas and a prevalent feature of Mexican deserts, as a testament to his enduring legacy. The grainy textures and retro styling evoke a profound sense of antiquity, heritage, and significance – essential components of a collector’s item of this caliber.
