After a week of competition in which the Belgian public packed the stands from the very first round, we now have the champions of the Brussels P2. And, as the rankings dictate, the two best couples in the world were crowned just before the break.

Ari and Paula return to winning ways

The number ones had not won a title since 17 February. On this occasion, in Brussels, they met again in the final against their great nemesis of the season: Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea. A duel in which the points and the prize money took second place. The main objective for Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaria was to nip the Spanish-Argentines’ winning streak in the bud.

The emotional blow of another defeat could have been hard for the ranking leaders. Triay and Brea are getting closer and closer in the rankings, and they arrived with the record in their favour: 0-3 in head-to-heads this season and four titles already under their belts.

Furthermore, if there was one thing that Ari and Paula were being criticised for at the start of the season, it was their inconsistency: tough matches, comebacks and a lack of consistency against opponents they had previously dominated with ease. However, all that was left behind on centre court in Brussels.

With a solid 6-2 and 6-4, the number ones were proclaimed champions at the Brussels P2, sending a strong message to both their rivals and themselves. A win that comes great before the break, perfect to recharge batteries with the best feelings.

Playing what Tapia wants

The men’s final also pitted the top two couples in the ranking against each other. A match that, unlike previous duels, was marked by disorder, a slow pace and numerous errors from the four players.

Chingotto and Galan got off to the best start, showing a more recognisable and effective padel. They took advantage of their good start to take the first set by a clear 6-2. Coello and Tapia, on the other hand, started off lacklustre, not finding their best version of themselves.

Everything changed at 3-3 in the second set. There, the number ones broke serve agonisingly and that gave them life. They raised their level of play, forced the third set with a 6-4 win and, from then on, the match changed hands.

Agustin Tapia, almost missing in action until then, woke up to become the main protagonist. The Mozart began to sign those shots anatomically questionable by the ligaments of the hand, impossible recoveries … everything that defines this genius. His partner, Arturo Coello, knew how to accompany him from the usual solidity.

With Tapia unleashed and Coello shielding the court, the number ones went over Chingotto and Galan in the final set, closing the final with a resounding 6-1. Once again, Agustín Tapia played what he wanted.
