After the thrilling appetiser that was the women’s final, the curtain fell on the Madrid P1 with the most eagerly awaited match. On centre court at the Movistar Arena, the kings of the rankings, Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, faced the couple who won the hearts of the crowd in this tournament: Martín Di Nenno and Leo Augsburger.
Martín and Leo defeat the tournament’s number 1, 2 and 3 couples
Once again, the number ones returned to the scene with the routine of those accustomed to accumulating titles. Opposite them were Di Nenno and Augsburger, who had burst onto the scene and were coming off the back of the match of the tournament in the semi-finals.
The first set was a statement of intent from the favourites. At 4-4, they found the break they needed to make the difference and close out the set 6-4. Their strategy was clear: avoid Augsburger’s lob and force him to play at the back. The young Argentine has all the qualities to go far, but his constant risk-taking, that madness that sometimes multiplies, also detracts when mistakes accumulate.
The second set was a different story. Leo, this time, added to the equation the spark that had been missing at the start. More relaxed, more connected with the crowd, he pushed his partner and they managed to break at just the right moment. Di Nenno provided the composure and Augsburger fired up the crowd. The 6-3 score sent the match to the third set and Madrid was already roaring.

The critical moment came with a scare. At 3-4, Augsburger lunged over the net to recover a shot and ended up falling spectacularly on his right elbow. After receiving medical attention, he returned to the padel court more uncertain, just when he was at his best.
But what defines Leo is his boldness. He doesn’t understand half measures: it’s either black or white. And in that gamble without a safety net, with the best Di Nenno in years, they achieved the feat. They took the third set 6-4 and with it the biggest title of their careers.

Madrid surrendered to the confidence of Augsburger and the solidity of Di Nenno, the executioners of the number ones. It was one of those finals that will be remembered because they write the future.
